Smart fridge trial
RLtec’s dynamic demand technology has undergone rigorous laboratory testing and is now being trialled with UK energy supplier, npower. In the first phase of the trial, 300 fridges have been fitted with dynamic demand and will be distributed to consumers. This will allow rigorous analysis of how the technology works in appliances in everyday use. In the second phase of the trial, a total of up to 3,000 fridges and freezers of different types and models will be deployed so that the carbon savings from dynamic demand can be measured in a wide variety of situations. The trial is the first Demonstration Action to be approved by the UK’s energy regulator, Ofgem, under the CERT (Carbon Emissions Reduction Target) legislation. It will contribute towards npower’s obligations to reduce its customers’ carbon emissions.
“I welcome the demonstration project led by npower and RLtec. The trial will help us gain a better understanding of how dynamic demand can work to reduce our use of fossil fuels. If successful it could help pave the way for the uptake of this technology nation-wide, which could result in significant carbon savings of around 2 million tonnes CO2 a year or higher.” Lord Hunt, Minister for Energy Innovation.
